Improvisation technique and choreography skills

For kids 10-14

Students will create solos, duets, and group pieces using improvisation games and movement challenges. Teaching to the whole child we will use everything, feelings, observations, personal thoughts, writings, and drawings to discover movement and create dances.    This class is about finding one's voice, developing skills that enhance dance abilities, as well as building confidence in one's unique gifts and perspective.   The spirit of community is felt in this class as kids are taught how to support each other and appreciate what each one has to offer.  Process more than performance, cooperative rather than competitive, this is about the making.

SUMMER CAMPS

Making Dances in Character

JUNE 14-18

Ages 10-14
10am-2pm (bring a lunch)
$200

Create a character.  What’s their story?  Where are they from? Are they human or another creature?  Most importantly, how do they move?  Through improvisation, journaling, and discussion campers will create a dance based on a character they’ve imagined.  These characters can be completely original or based on fairytales, movies, or books they are familiar with.  Mornings will start with an improvisational warm-up and modern dance technique and after lunch composing a dance.  Informal performances will be on Friday, the last day, at 2:00 p.m.

Making Dances in Costume

JULY 19-22
Ages 10-14
10am-2pm (bring a lunch)
$200

We will be Making Dances inspired by COSTUME!   How does the costume move?  What can you do and not do with it?  Do you feel a certain way when you put it on?  Maybe it inspires a character you'd like to be?
Mornings will start with improvisational warm-up and modern dance technique, then will move to improvisation with the costume, playing with character or theme and movement.  We will build a dance that will be performed on Friday at pick up at 2:00 p.m.
